NEW YORK – 'Confessions of the Face' explores the power of storytelling and the power of the human face as an expression of individuality. Under the direction of Papo Colo, founder and director of Trickster Theater, cultural producer of Exit Art and independent performance artist, an eclectic group of young New York actors have developed ten 10-minute monologues, collectively presented here, using the face as a landscape and a fictional autobiography as text.
Featuring mainly first-generation Americans from diverse cultural backgrounds, each of these monologues relates a distinct history. African-American, Puerto-Rican, Italian, Eastern European, Southwestern, Mexican and Russian actors use recollections of family and cultural history to create the script, using the face as the basic visual material. “The face, the professional tool of the actor, is placed in the middle of their personal emotions,” says director Papo Colo.
Consistent with Trickster Theater’s long-standing commitment to pioneering, interdisciplinary programming, this project synthesizes live performance with new media. In contemporary theater, the actor is treated as an instrument of the script; the personal experience and emotional memory of the actor is set aside. 'Confessions of the Face' elevates and pays homage to the actor, as he or she actively participates, creating personal stories that are, at once, fictional and autobiographical. Theater is presented here as a collaborative enterprise in which the director works with each actor to develop the script. The human face as both landscape and narrative is the primary vehicle of 'Confessions of the Face'.
The world premiere of this film screens at Exit Art on Tuesday July 29, 2008 at 8pm in Exit Underground’s digital theater. For more information, please visit www.exitart.org. FREE.
